No, I've not got any idea on dates. The top photo I think is a later image due to there being major alterations to the buildings, 2 chimneys for example. The glass house to the right of the front door isn't present on the photos I have that where taken in the thirties. My feeling is the fifties.

Steven, the picture you took of the tree with the engraving on - is in French the word translates to august and the word that looks like love is how the french would write the date 10th so it translate to 1859 10th August.

Mr Mott`s Mad House

Postby Steve Shaw » Sun Mar 07, 2010 6:06 pm

I can remember years ago hearing rumours of an old lunatic asylum that used to be on the site of the Post House Hotel. Recently I decided to look it up on the internet. It was great to see it did exist and I wasn`t going mad.
If you have any interest in the lodge I can highly recommend Mr Mott`s Mad House by Allan Smith. http://studymore.org.uk/allanamp.htm They were excellent pictures, thank you for sharing them

Hi Steven,
My name is Amanda. I am trying to find records of my grandmothers employment in Haydock Lodge. On My grandmothers marriage certificate for August 3rd 1912 in st. Thomas Ashton in maker-field church. It stated her address was given as haydock lodge. I know she was employed there im trying to research my family history and piece together my family history. Would you or any of the other members have any records of the employment in haydock lodge during this time.

Thank :)
Amanda

I havent managed to find a list of employees as yet, but I do have an excel spreadsheet with some of the patients. I can send this to Steven if anyone is interested.

Its quite sad really - here are some examples which we would struggle to understand in our modern times. Yet.....it wasn't that long ago. Amazing photos by the way. Looks like the hotel stands on much the same footprint. Can any Google Earth experts do a comparison ....a sort of then and now?
It would be so interesting to those of us that love to make comparisons-

Here's a medical student who has been working too hard -
Varley, William Crowther, cause Over study, condition Chronic mania, treatment - Moral and Hygiene

This poor chap died when his business failed -
Hadfield, William, Disappoint-ment in busines, Acute Mania, treatment - Bed and walked for four hours by two attendants, outcome - Died aged 26

This chap died of a broken heart it seems -
Freeman, William, cause -Death of wife, condition dementia, treatment Moral and Hygiene with Rest in bed, outcome Died aged 46

This young mans condition was however considered curable - !
Mills, William, cause -Masturbat-ion in Adolescence, condition Acute mania, treatment Moral and Hygienic, outcome Discharged cured aged 19

Lots of other admissions associated with love affairs, alchohol, morality issues and all kinds of odd and strange things!
Cheers Sheila

This is what I meant Bob. I have rotated this modern image from Google Earth to reflect what I think are the original roads (notice the curves in the Lane) - in which case it could be that those original roads still exist. Wow - thats great as anyone with a camera really could do a "now v then" shot.....I suspect.

Any thoughts? Are those pathways around the present hotel the original roads anyone?

Hi She

That old view you have posted of the lodge is taken from a the dean dam direction

The A49 is the straight line to the rear left of the lodge, and the entrance to the racecourse is along the top

lodge.jpg

so you need to spin your google map view around about 100 degrees counter clockwise

She, have you tried MSN or as it is called now Bing maps,
go onto Bing maps, navigate to the hall, No1, then use the same button to see Birds Eye shot,
then go to the 3D button No3 and you can move the picture around a tad to get the angle you need,
