Hi Everybody, Can anyone give me any information on Pipers Hole Cottage which I think was on Parkside Road, Winnick? During my search for my family I have discovered that my 3x great grandmother lived at the cottage between 1841 to 1851, the family name was Peake. The cottage name seems unusual and has aroused my curiosity. If there are any old photo's of the cottage I would love to see them. Thanks in anticipation and many thanks for help in the past. Regards, Sheila

Hi All, Just had a search and found the following post/topic which may be of interest to you Sheila: http://www.newton-le-willows.com/history/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1294&p=9655&hilit=Pipers+Hole+Cottage#p9655The thread/topic is titled, "Ghost Walk". Not sure how much help it will prove but thought it was a place to start. Just found another thread/topic which will probably prove more useful/relavant: http://www.newton-le-willows.org/history/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1276&hilit=Pipers+HoleThe thread/topic is titled, "The Hermatage Farm". Thanks Neileen and Kirsty, I've found the posts and am busy reading them. I may go and find Pipers Hole Cottage and take a modern day photo (with permission of course). Cheers, Sheila

I pass it every day and its up for sale I believe. If I am correct about this, a photo of it should be on some estate agents website.
It is on the sharp corner before St Oswalds Well ...driving in a Lowton direction- on your right.
Cheers Sheila

There is a James and Annie Peake listed in the 1919 Electoral register, possibly for Pipers Hole. It is a bit unclear. The names before the PEAKES have house names after the persons name. The page seems to group about 6 or 8 names with the same house name, then a gap of a couple, then house names etc.
xxxx XXXX ~ I made this name up for Cottage in Parkside xxxx XXXX ~ I made this name up for Cottage in Parkside Annie PEAKE ~ (no number or name for the house) James PEAKE ~ (no number or name for the house) James POTTER ~ Pipers Hole Isabella POTTER ~ Pipers Hole Robert HODGKISS ~ Pipers Hole Fanny HODGKISS ~ Pipers Hole Fanny WINSTANLEY ~ Pipers Hole Samuel WINSTANLEY ~ Pipers Hole Charles Wiliiam HARVEY snr ~ (no number or name for the house) Mary HARVEY ~ (no number or name for the house) xxxx XXXX ~ Highfield Farm xxxx XXXX ~ Highfield Farm

Thanks, everybody for the help you have given me. I found the cottage and now have some history about it (gleaned from this site) and a modern day photo. I am not too sure how to go about finding and searching Electoral Rolls? Regards, Sheila

Present day electoral rolls - go to the local library. Certainly the history section at Leigh library does have former electoral rolls as well and they cover the area where Pipers Hole cottage is. So if you are local this is a great free resource. You can also get them from www.ancestry.com or www.findmypast.co.uk/electoral-roll.jsp www.findmypast.co.uk/electoral-roll.jsp What I have done before now is actually write a letter to the present day occupants of a house you are researching. I included my email address and what/why I was interested, and the occupants got back to me with tons of information. They had old pictures, property plans and had already gone to great lengths to research the background to their cottage. Most people are very helpful and so I would certainly do that next - just write them a letter. Good luck
Cheers Sheila
